Call for Papers:

(Please note, the Call for Papers is now closed.)

The study of literature by Aboriginal writers in Canada has often been subsumed under categories, patterns, and themes that fail to recognize the unique styles, imaginations, tropes and metaphors of individual authors. This conference seeks to explore and highlight the aesthetic richness of the texts and the fluid nature of language. It will bring together writers and scholars respectively engaged in artistic and critical appreciation of "the love of words" in Aboriginal literatures.

A variety of critical perspectives and/or themes are encouraged; however, papers should discuss an Aboriginal (particularly, First Nations and Métis) author and/or work(s) with particular emphasis on uniqueness, nuance, complexity, and creativity of the writer/writing. Some themes that may emerge include:

  • language and style
  • audience and community
  • standards of literary evaluation
  • resistance aesthetics
  • genres and genders
  • space and borders

We invite submissions of three (3) copies of either proposals (300-500 words) or completed papers. Please include a 100 word abstract, and a brief bio-bibliographical note (50 words). Also kindly submit an email or a computer disk with the same information. The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2004.
