Sociology and Criminology


Pre-Master's | M.A. | Ph.D.


Application Fee: $100 CDN (non-refundable)

All applicants must meet the minimum admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

An acceptable English Language Proficiency test score is required, if applicable. Please note that Sociology and Criminology requires scores above the FGS minimum requirement, as follows:

IELTS A minimum score of 6.5 or higher on each test.
TOEFL (iBT) A minimum total score of 100 is required, with a minimum of 22 in Speaking and Writing.

For initial assessment purposes only, copies of unofficial transcripts (uploaded to your application) are acceptable and preferred. Transcripts are required from each institution for the entire academic history, whether or not degree has been awarded, including institutions attended on an exchange. If the English copy is a translation, please include the original language as well.

Degree Certificates – All international transcripts must be accompanied by degree certificates that indicate that the degree has been awarded.


Master of Arts

The M.A. thesis-based program consists of a combination of coursework and a research component.

Doctor of Philosophy

The Ph.D. option consists of coursework and a substantial research component.

*Applicants should submit their online application with supporting documentation and application fee by the deadline date indicated. Applicants wishing to be considered for a University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) should submit a complete application, including all supporting documentation by January 15.
