The internship program provides practical field experience and fulfills the recommended 'planning work experience' part of the CIP Program. Planning internships provide an opportunity to explore the interface between planning theory and practice and to reflect on planners' fundamental roles. We recommend internship activity be undertaken during the intervening summer between Years 1 and 2. There are no credits associated with an internship, although an evaluation by the placement supervisor is requested.
- To revisit, reconsider, integrate, and apply/test, the Planning Theory course, and the learning from other courses taken to date, in a practical placement setting;
- To initiate and facilitate active exploration by students of their evolving praxis of planning, in all its dimensions - technical, utopian and moral, through active reflection on their learning, in terms of acquired knowledge, skills, ethical insight and practical wisdom.
- To experience full-time planning practice first-hand under the supervision of a practitioner (assisted by City Planning department representatives), to maintain a professional journal recording reflections on this experience, and to participate in a summative evaluation of the experience to extract lessons and learning.
- To effect mutually beneficial linkages between students, the Department of City Planning and the planning profession, in pursuit of the advancement of the theory and practice of planning in the public domain.
Students have been very successful in securing internships following their first two terms of classes. The internship integrates theory and practice, giving students the opportunity to synthesize and apply their planning knowledge and skills as interns. Students are placed with practicing planners in planning office settings, private, public, community and NGO sectors.
