Ryan Gorrie

Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek
Award-winning architect, Graduate speaker for the Graduation Pow Wow in 2009

What inspires you?
I am inspired by dreams, the unconscious realm that guides me, no matter how much I doubt my path, the dreams lead me, like a silent teacher, I am so thankful. I am inspired by the “coincidences” that show me how connected we are to each other and to the natural world. Our paths are not set, we are free, and our world is open to receive us. I am inspired by our traditional peoples, the ones with good hearts who work for the betterment of the people, the world.

What is your advice to current Indigenous university students and the 2014 Indigenous graduates of the University of Manitoba?
My advice to indigenous peoples seeking their education is to make it your own, challenge yourself to find your way, you will take ownership of your life. Find a mentor, a guide, someone who’s been there, but will let you fall a little, will teach you. Learn your traditional ways and language, they will ground you, give you inspiration and will support your efforts. Give thanks, be happy for your life, and celebrate by doing your best even when you feel your worst, put positive thoughts, prayers into what you do.
