Served as National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations for three consecutive terms, served as Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs for three consecutive terms, successfully negotiated the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. Member of the Order of Manitoba and Officer of the Order of Canada. Recipient of the Equitas Award for Human Rights Education.

What inspires you?
My mother, Agnes Fontaine - the first woman councillor to be elected, Sagkeeng First Nation

What is your advice to current Indigenous university students and the 2014 Indigenous graduates of the University of Manitoba?
My advice to the graduates is to never stop challenging yourselves. Raise the bar and make each success the stepping stone for another challenge. This will become a way of life and this value will be passed on to your children and communities.
