What inspires You?
I really love the gleam in student eyes when I’m teaching and when they are learning. Can’t be beat!

I’m also driven by a sense of fair play and justice for all. I’ve always supported the underdog, having been one myself for many years.

I also react positively when someone tells me “not to bother” or “you’re too old” or “you can’t do that”. I see this as a direct challenge and proceed to do what they said couldn’t be done.

When I was 40 and wanted to finish my BA, get an MA and do the PHD pretty well everyone said, I was too old. Started at 40 and graduated with PHD at 51.

What is your advice to current Indigenous university students and the 2014 Indigenous graduates for the University of Manitoba?
Dream big, work hard and pay back to the community! Always be the last one off the dance floor, even if you can’t dance all that well!
