Advising Excellence Award

In honour of Wendy McLean’s retirement and over ten years of service advising students, the Advising Excellence Award was established at the University of Manitoba in 2017. The purpose of the award is to recognize staff for their outstanding academic and student advising achievements. Each academic year, one award of $300 will be directed by the Vice Provost (Students) towards professional development for one full or part-time staff member who is employed as an Academic or Student Advisor at the University of Manitoba. The recipient of this award will select a professional development activity, in the form of tuition, books or workshop/course registration, which will be paid on behalf of the employee.

Candidates will be required to submit a letter outlining how they have shown excellence in advising over the past year (maximum 500 words). The selection committee will consider the following criteria:

  1. improvements to processes and procedures
  2. advancements in collaboration and/or teamwork excellence
  3. notable creativity and innovation in advising techniques
  4. outstanding efforts with individual students
  5. high levels of student engagement resulting from innovative practices
  6. creative programming for advising students
  7. productive use of University or community resources

The letter should include:

  1. name
  2. unit
  3. email address, and
  4. years of service

Three letters in support of the candidate’s self-nomination, that attest to the individual’s eligibility for the award and outstanding contributions, from co-workers, supervisors, students, community partners, etc. are required.

Candidates will be required to submit their letter by no later than May 15th of each year.

Please note that previous recipients of this award are welcome to reapply five years after being named the successful recipient.
