About UNEVOC Canada
Roots of UNEVOC - Canada
Recently the Prosperity Secretariat recommended the
establishment of a National Centre for Research in Vocational Education
in Canada as an appropriate institutional framework to provide optimal
structural, logistic and administrative adaptability and the necessary
dynamics for change. In response to this call eighteen universities in
collaboration with private, public and nonprofit sector members have
formed a consortium to establish a national network in vocational
education Vocational Education and Training Network -International
(VETNET - International). For the first time in the history of technical
and vocational education in Canada, faculty members involved in research
and teaching in vocational education, from 18 universities; 24 national
and international collaborators; 30 public and private sector
organizations, and 15 nonprofit sector agencies have joined forces to
address the problems and issues related to education for work. Given that VETNET met all the criteria to become a
UNEVOC centre a proposal requesting the nomination of VETNET as the
UNEVOC Centre for Canada was submitted to the Canadian Commission for
UNESCO. After conducting a national consultation with some key
stakeholders in technical and vocational education in Canada, the
Canadian Commission for UNESCO approved the proposal which was
subsequently transmitted to Mr. Colin Power, the Assistant Director
General for Education of the UNESCO for consideration. The proposal was
approved in April 1998 and Canada became a member of the UNEVOC
network. Since the University of Manitoba is the lead institution in the
vocational consortium, it was nominated as the UNEVOC Centre for
Canada. |
