About UNEVOC Canada
University of Manitoba Institutional Profile
Established in 1877, the University of Manitoba is
western Canada's oldest university. It offers instruction to more than
40,000 people annually and employs approximately 6,000 academic and
support staff. From architecture to zoology, the University provides an
outstanding and diverse range of courses and studies in more than 80
degree, diploma, associateship and certificate programs. These programs
are offered in 22 academic units which represent more than 90
disciplines. The U of M is the largest of Manitoba's universities,
offering the bulk of the province's professional programs and having the
only Faculty of Graduate Studies for master's and doctoral programs. The University of Manitoba is one of Canada's leading
research universities. The accomplishments of its faculty and graduates
have won national and international praise, and the consistently high
quality of its research programs now generates more than $50 million
annually in grants and contracts. Research is fundamental to the mission
of the University and is an essential underpinning of all its educational
programs. This is especially true at the graduate level, where research
plays a key role in training highly qualified personnel, who are
increasingly in demand by industries, governments and universities. The University of Manitoba is home to more than 20
research centres and institutes. Designed to focus research in specific
areas and to encourage collaboration among disciplines, these centres and
institutes provide unique educational and training opportunities for both
graduate and undergraduate students. They also are a valuable
information resource for the community at large. As the province's only
research-intensive university, the University of Manitoba is a
cornerstone in the provincial research environment. Through
collaboration and partnership agreements, the University makes its
expertise, facilities and high technology equipment available to business
and industry as well as government agencies and other universities. The
University is home to several government research agencies. Transferring new scientific technologies from lab to
marketplace is a growing activity at the University of Manitoba. The
Industry Liaison Office was recently established to facilitate the
commercialization of University research and link the research expertise
and capabilities of the University with Canadian business and industry.
The University is also in the process of establishing a research park
where the interests of large and small corporations will be matched with
University resources to create a concentration of advanced technology and
expertise.
