Teaching philosophy

Josie Bolianatz practices a strength-based teaching approach where she values each student as an individual and supports them to reach their goals. She aims to create an environment where the space between the educator and learner is narrowed so they can show one another who they are in order to find collective interests and passions. She utilizes narrative pedagogy to illustrate subjects, sharing with students her triumphs and lessons learned to help them see how knowledge is applied and used in practice. She enjoys coaching, questioning and challenging students’ thinking, explaining complicated ideas and continually learning through exploring new opportunities.

Biography

Josie Bolianatz is an Instructor II at the College of Nursing, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. In 2012 she graduated with a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Saskatchewan. Early in her career, she worked as a registered nurse in the emergency department where she cared for acutely ill patients across the lifespan. While continuing her bedside practice, Bolianatz began working as a clinical educator facilitating nursing students’ practice in long-term care, acute medicine and surgical units. During this time, she fell further in love with teaching and learning.

In 2016, Bolianatz moved to Winnipeg to attend the graduate program at the College of Nursing. With her master’s degree, she studied learning and curriculum design. Her thesis study was entitled ‘From the Highest of Highs to Lowest of Lows’ Learning the Nursing Profession in a Concept-based Curriculum: A Hermeneutic Phenomenology Study. This original research examined what it was like to become a nurse within modern academic environments. She completed her master of nursing with an education focus in 2021.

While completing her master’s degree, she continued to work as a clinical educator, now with UM. During this time she also gained extensive experience as a simulation facilitator.
This diverse experience has led Josie to develop a solid foundation in qualitative research, curriculum design and guiding students’ experience as they become a registered nurse. She is able to use her knowledge to collaboratively work towards strengthening and progressing education opportunities.

Bolianatz continues to seek out opportunities to learn and develop as a Registered Nurse, educator, and leader.
