Research summary

Contributions to date have included publications in the areas of: (a) Identifying and understanding large, unwarranted variations in ICU care and outcomes, (b) epidemiology and long-term outcomes of critical illness, (c) end-of-life planning and care, (d) bidirectional interface between critical illness and chronic disorders, and (e) effect of acute health shocks on the ability of working-age people to work and earn. Currently, Dr. Garland is a co-principal investigator of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded Canadian Sepsis Network, where he co-leads the Population Health pillar of the network.

Biography

Allan Garland received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan and Master's. from Harvard University, both in Physics. He completed his Doctor of Medicine, internal medicine residency, and research/clinical fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Chicago. In faculty positions at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey, and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Ohio, he was the director of their medical intensive care units. He came to the University of Manitoba in 2007, where he is professor of medicine and community health sciences, and adjunct scientist at the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy. From 2012-2021 he was co-head of critical care medicine.
