Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)

This October, the university will be implementing multi-factor authentication (MFA) on the virtual private network (VPN) for staff and faculty. At the University of Manitoba, all staff and faculty are encouraged to enrol in MFA to sign in to the virtual private network (VPN) to access university systems.

Multi-factor authentication or MFA adds an extra layer of security to your university accounts to protect you, your data and university systems from unauthorized access and phishing attacks.

Verifying your identity using a second factor such as your phone or mobile device prevents others from accessing your accounts, even if they know your password.

Read about MFA in Authentication changes for staff and faculty are coming to campus.

Duo enrolment contest!

Enrol in Duo and start using multi-factor authentication (MFA) with VPN this October and November and you could win!  Our team will be drawing for three fantastic prizes on Tuesday, December 1.

You will receive an email with a link to the instructions for setting up multi-factor authentication when it is rolled out to your area. To qualify for the draw, all you have to do is enrol in Duo and regularly log in to the VPN using a second factor like the Duo Mobile app.

Winners will be selected by a random draw on December 1, 2020.

Prizes:

  • 1st prize: Google home, Apple watch and Nest thermostat bundle
  • 2nd prize: Apple watch
  • 3rd prize: Nest thermostat

Note: Student employees and sponsored accounts are not eligible to win.

Phishing Simulations

Can you recognize a suspicious looking email message? This month IST will be sending one or two messages to your Inbox that may not be what they seem.  An email might be suspicious if it fits any of the criteria listed in the “Let's crush phishing!”  article in UM Today.

Remember to forward any suspicious messages to spam[at]umanitoba[dot]ca.
