University College of the North partnership

For over two decades, the College of Nursing at the University of Manitoba (UM) and the University College of the North have joined forces to bring you the UM Bachelor of Nursing (BN) program in The Pas and Thompson.

In 1996, as diploma nursing programs were closing, the ministers of health and education introduced a new approach to nursing education through the Manitoba Nursing Education Strategy. The aim was to streamline nursing education in the province, transitioning to a BN degree as the entry point for registered nurses. This paved the way for a partnership between UM and Keewatin Community College, resulting in the launch of UM’s BN Program in The Pas and Thompson, with the first courses starting in the fall of 1998. Witness the evolution as Keewatin Community College becomes the University College of the North in July 2004.

Our integrated approach ensures a consistent curriculum across all three sites. Every September, we welcome 20 new students into the program in The Pas and Thompson. Graduates emerge equipped to provide exceptional care, making a positive impact in their local communities and beyond.
