The FKRM’s student council was first established in 1966 as SAHPER. SAHPER stands for the “Student Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation Studies.” The mission of SAHPER is to provide an opportunity for academic enhancement as well as social interaction for all our students.
All students enrolled in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management (FKRM) are members of this organization. The council, elected by the student body, is dedicated to clearly communicating and promoting opportunities—for all students in all programs—that enrich academic learning, professional development, and social experiences that create a positive sense of community membership.
As of 2017, SAHPER’s title changed to PERKS Council. PERKS Council stands for Physical Education Recreational Kinesiology Student Council.
As a council, we recognize the importance to include kinesiology in the faculty student council title.
What does PERKS Council Do?
We serve all undergraduate students in FKRM by:
1. Providing current information about professional and career developments in physical education, recreation, and kinesiology.
2. Promoting active living and social well-being by offering a wide range of positive and fun social events throughout the year.
3. Representing student interests to staff and professors in our programs, the University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU), Senate, and other professional organizations in the community.
Organizing all sorts of other activities such as graduation celebration, grad pictures, rings, and clothing that show case student pride in being members of FKRM.
