Research summary

Dr. MacDonald’s research focuses on upper extremity, knee, sports injuries and arthroscopy.

Biography

Dr. MacDonald joined the department of surgery at the University of Manitoba in 1992 and became professor and head of the section of orthopaedics at the University of Manitoba in 2007.

He is a past president of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association and was appointed the vice president of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons in 2020 and will become the second ever Canadian president for the society in 2022.

Dr. MacDonald serves as head team physician of the Winnipeg Jets (NHL) and head orthopaedic surgeon of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (CFL). He is also a member of the executive committee of the NHL Team Physician Society.

His main areas of interest are sports medicine and upper extremity surgery as well as concussion and orthopaedic surgery education.

Dr. MacDonald has published extensively with more than 160 primary publications and almost 500 presentations at the regional, national and international level.

Dr. MacDonald is the chief innovation and research officer at the Pan Am Clinic and is currently the principle or co-investigator in approximately 40 prospective and retrospective studies.

One main focus is the comparison of different surgical techniques in the management of patients with rotator cuff, shoulder instability, and anterior cruciate ligament injury.
