Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (HSC) Inpatient Service

Service Overview

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatient Services of the Health Sciences Centre consists of 14 acute care beds on the ward PY1, PsycHealth Centre. It provides comprehensive multi-disciplinary assessment and crisis stabilization for children and adolescents under the age of 18 from the province of Manitoba and parts of Nunavut in accordance with the Mental Health act of Manitoba.  Children and adolescents in need of emergent stabilization and assessment in a tertiary care acute care ward are referred by child and adolescent psychiatrists from the emergency room, crisis clinics and their offices.  The mandate of the ward is psychiatric care with focus on diagnosis and acute stabilization care with the length of stay average of 7-10 days.  Follow-up care is arranged with the appropriate outpatient services.

In addition to clinical service, education and research are important components of the service.  The program provides training to psychiatric residents, medical students, nursing students, psychology residents, social work students and occupational therapy students.  Clinical research in addition to quality assurance projects occur as part of the mandate of this service.
