ICATS is an urgent multi-disciplinary short term psychiatric treatment service in the WRHA Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program involving a psychiatrist, a full time nurse therapist, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists and a recreational therapist. Children, adolescents and their families are referred by child and adolescent psychiatrists at the Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface General Hospital. An intake meeting is scheduled, usually within seven days of the intake phone call. Psychiatric care, group and individual psychotherapy, individual and group occupational therapy, family therapy, recreation therapy and parent groups are provided for a maximum of three months. A wide range of diagnoses are treated using a bio-psycho-social model. Psychiatry residents often participate in this service with the opportunity to provide individual and group therapy and to participate in team meetings and educational sessions.
