- Medical Licensure Program for International Medical Graduates (MLPIMG)
What is the MLPIMG?
- It is a 1-year training program for family physicians
- It is provided to enhance the current skills of IMG physicians
- MLPIMG physicians will work in rural and underserviced areas of Manitoba for return of service

What training is provided in the MLPIMG?
- IMG training follows a PGY1 program structure
- There are 13 four-week postgraduate medical education rotations (PGME) in:
- Emergency medicine – 2 rotations (4 weeks urban and 4 weeks rural)
- Family medicine – 3 rotations (12 weeks - urban and rural)
- Gynecology – 1 rotation (4 weeks)
- Obstetrics – 1 rotation (4 weeks)
- Internal medicine – 2 rotations (8 weeks)
- Pediatrics (outpatient) – 1 rotation (4 weeks)
- Pediatrics (ward) – 1 rotation (4 weeks)
- Psychiatry – 1 rotation (4 weeks)
- Vacation – 1 rotation (4 weeks)
- IMG Physicians are evaluated at the mid-point and end of each rotation
- Failure of any 1 rotation results in remediation
- Failure of any 2 rotations will result in dismissal from the MLPIMG

How do I apply to the MLPIMG?

- The application and selection process is the same for all applicants—there are no exceptions
- The application process involves 2 main steps:
- Top ranked candidates at each step advance to the next step in a reverse pyramid manner
- Proceeding to one step does not guarantee movement to the next step
- It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure all documents are submitted/verified
- The program is not responsible for missing documents or incomplete packages

- Applications are reviewed and ranked
- Highest ranked applicants are invited for interview
- Not all applicants will be interviewed
- Interview
- Personal interview
- Not a knowledge based interview
- Lasts 30 minutes
- Two or more interviewers independently rate candidates’ answers
- Structured questions are the same for all applicants
- Applicants are responsible for their transportation to the interviews
- Application to CPSM
- must provide evidence of satisfactory completion of training in family medicine acceptable to the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Manitoba that:
- is approved by the Registrar;
- took place in one or more health care facilities recognized by a national post-graduate training authority; and
- is accredited with a national post-graduate training authority or was accredited at the time that training was completed.
- must have a pass standing on the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Exam (MCCEE) or the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part 1 (MCCQE Part 1);
- must have valid proof of English language proficiency
- Sponsorship
- Highest ranking applicants will be invited to a sponsorship interview with representatives of Manitoba Healthcare Providers and Regional Health Authorities (RHAs)
- Successful candidates will be required to complete a return of service in Manitoba (current duration 4 years)
- Only applicants who are offered and subsequently accept sponsorship by a RHA will be accepted in the MLPIMG Program
Getting ready for the MLPIMG training
- You will be interacting with multiple departments and agencies (Important Organizations)
- Obtain educational registration with CPSM http://cpsm.mb.ca/educational
- Training
- Orientation
- Mandatory
- 4-week structured orientation for all IMG’s (Orientation)
- Conducted in Winnipeg
- Prepares candidates for the Canadian Health Care System
- Stipend during this period is provided by the Sponsoring RHA and is based on attendance
- Post-training
- Successful candidates will:
- Work for their sponsoring RHA employer for return of service
- Be eligible to apply for Provisional Registration - Family Practice Limited with CPSM
- Mentorship - International Medical Graduate Mentorship and Clinical Enhancement (IMGMCE)
- Physicians are assigned a mentor for a 1 year term
- Must complete reports
- Assigned a practice supervisor for the duration of their provisional licensure
