About Three Minute Thesis (3MT®)

What is it?HistoryWhy we're doing it

What is it?

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland.

3MT® challenges students to consolidate their ideas and research discoveries so they can be presented concisely to a non-specialist audience.

The first 3MT® was held at The University of Queensland in 2008 with 160 students competing. Enthusiasm for the 3MT® concept grew and its adoption by numerous universities led to the development of a Trans-Tasman international competition, starting in 2010, involving 33 universities in Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji.

In 2011, the Trans-Tasman 3MT® competition grew to 43 universities and, for the first time, regional 3MT® events were held in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Hong Kong.

2016 brought an expansion of the Trans-Tasman 3MT competition to include a select number of Asian universities.

Why we're doing it

At the University of Manitoba, 3MT® is part of an overall strategy to contribute to the following objectives:

  • Celebrate and promote graduate students and graduate studies at the U of M across Canada
  • Inform the campus community about the research being done by our graduate students
  • Connect with and inform the alumni about the research being done by our graduate students
