My main project is focused on Crude oil spill preparedness in the Canadian Arctic, more specifically in Hudson Bay. It is hard to imagine the possible consequences of a crude oil spill in Canada’s beautiful Arctic environment. Searching for possible crude oil spill remediation techniques in the Arctic, we decided to start with the bacteria which are already present in the water and are able to biodegrade crude oil. That is what project GENICE is about. In our laboratory, we conduct a chemical analysis of crude oil to investigate the changes in its composition due to biodegradation, evaporation, dissolution in seawater and photooxidation. We apply state-of-the-art analytical instruments for crude oil composition analysis such as GCxGC-TOFMS, Triple quadrupole mass spectrometer and G2-Si MS.
