Arc Education

Arc Education is a new initiative that aims to build a group similar to a gay-straight alliance (GSA) in the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Education.

The name "Arc" represents the height of the rainbow, a symbol of diversity and pride in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit and queer (LGBTTQ) community. We see education as being at the "height" of confronting issues and challenges facing LGBTTQ people, and therefore well-positioned as a discipline to contribute to social change.

As a social and research group, we have several purposes:

  • To create a safe space for LGBTTQ students, faculty and staff and their allies in the Faculty of Education;
  • To explore some of the complex issues surrounding sexual and gender diversity faced by stakeholders in education (teachers, administrators, students and so forth); and
  • To guide teacher candidates, educators, administrators, researchers and colleagues on the process of creating a gay-straight alliance in Manitoban schools and other educational venues.

  Held 4:30-5:30 p.m. in Room 228, meetings are currently being scheduled for 2018-2019.

This schedule has taken into consideration the academic schedules of BEd teacher candidates, graduate students, Faculty of Education faculty members and staff.

Anyone who is interested in joining the group is welcome. Students, faculty and staff are most welcome to attend. Attendees are encouraged to preview the website so they can obtain a sense of what a GSA does.
