Student supports

We can help you at every step of your journey. Here are resources to navigate the academic, financial and personal aspects of life in the Faculty of Arts.

Academic advising

Our Arts Academic Advisors are your primary resource for degree planning. Both Canadian and international students can contact us for:

  • degree planning
  • declarations and program changes
  • confirming graduation requirements
  • a program status check using UMAchieve, our degree audit software
  • information about a wide variety of helpful campus resources

Many of your requests may require a form to be completed for action to be taken. Please refer to Student forms for forms you can submit by email.

Drop-in and pre-booked appointments

  • You can join the in-person drop in queue or book a future appointment by clicking the appropriate button above, using the kiosk outside of our office (134 Fletcher Argue) or scanning the QR code posted around campus.
  • The drop-in queue allows you to reserve a place in line to meet with one of our staff same-day for in-person assistance.
  • Once in the queue, you will be notified via text message and/or email of your place in line, your expected wait time and when to arrive to the office.
  • If you are booking a same-day drop-in meeting and are not yet on campus, select the "not yet on campus" button and when you arrive on campus text 2 to confirm your arrival to activate your reserved spot.
  • The "book an appointment" button allows you to book an in-person, virtual or phone appointment for a future date.
  • Appointments may be limited. If you cannot find a time or type of appointment for your needs, contact us by email or phone and we will assist you.

Important note regarding 2022/23 course registration:

Due to the time-sensitive nature of registration, we advise all students to use UM Achieve as your first resource for course selection and planning.

  • If you are uncertain on how to read or interpret your audit, please review the Faculty of Arts UM Achieve Guidelines.

  • If you have questions about the courses listed in your audit, email your specific questions to an Arts advisor for review and response.

  • Contacting our office by phone or chat may help you to understand your audit results without the need to await a full program check.

UM Achieve includes many, but not all, Faculty of Arts programs. Students who cannot use UM Achieve, will need to use the Academic Calendar or have an email consult with an Arts Advisor.

Specifically, the following student types cannot use UM Achieve due to system limitations:

  • Students admitted as second degree

  • Students in the Bachelor of Arts Integrated Studies degree (BAIS)

  • Students in any Double General, Advanced or Honours degrees

If your program is not in UM Achieve, please identify this in your email's subject line to allow for the most efficient response time.
