Why is Criminology a part of the Sociology Department?

Criminology is a program that offers General Major (3-year) and Honours degrees separate from Sociology degrees, but it is a part of the Sociology program. Both Sociology and Criminology course numbers begin with the SOC prefix.  The Criminology and Sociology programs reside in the same department because Criminology is one of the specific subfields of the broader discipline of Sociology. Both areas share the same sociological foundation, perspectives, and methods – Criminology is simply one of the areas in which some sociologists specialize. So while all criminologists are also sociologists, not all sociologists are criminologists.
