Bio

My research and teaching are motivated by a concern with the social and political production of the built form. My focus is on the links between professional practice, political processes, and the shaping of urban space. I am interested in research that is focused on issues of social justice and is relevant to professional planners.

My research seeks to understand how planners in professional practice are influenced by political, economic and institutional structures, and how this impacts goals of social equity and justice. My current research focuses on two areas: (1) the political-economic context of professional planning, and (2) the integration of equity goals in transportation planning. This work has been published in journals such as Urban Affairs Review, Journal of Urban Affairs, Transportation Research Part A, and Journal of Planning Education and Research, and funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, MITACS, and Centre for Professional and Applied Ethics. My previous research has examined planning processes through a variety of lenses, include the role of private sector consultants, decision-making for transport planning, the evolution of design plans over time, and constructions of professional expertise.

I received my PhD in Urban Planning from the University of California, Los Angeles and a M.Sc. in Urban Planning from the University of Toronto. Previously, I worked in planning and policy at the municipal and provincial levels. I am a Registered Professional Planner and active with the Manitoba Professional Planners Institute.
