The University is committed to minimizing or eliminating risk to the health and safety of staff, students and advisors. An effective fire safety program is an important element of that commitment.
Fire warden training
Fire Warden training is scheduled throughout the year.

Training sessions run approximately 1.5 hours and will cover the following topics:
- Fire Warden roles and responsibilities
- Evacuation procedures
- Chief Fire Warden roles and responsibilities
- Fire drills
- Badge preparation
Fire extinguisher training
All staff and students are welcome to attend fire extinguisher training in May, June, July, August and September each year. There are two parts to training:
- In-class presentation:
- A 30-minute training session covering types of fires, fire extinguishers and proper extinguishing techniques. To see the schedule and register for an in-class training session, please see the training schedule.
- Hands-on training:
- A hands-on training session giving attendees practical experience operating a Fire Extinguisher using a training simulator. You do not need to register for a hands-on training session. Simply show up to one of our scheduled sessions between the hours listed (weather permitting) to complete training.
- Fort Garry Campus:
Time: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Location: Environmental Safety Building, directly South of U-LOT and West off the Fisheries Institute
- Bannatyne campus:
Time: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Location: UM Parkade (Bannatyne and Tecumseh) level 3
You must attend in-class and hands-on training to complete Fire Extinguisher training. It is recommended you attend the in-class presentation before attending hands-on training, but you may complete training in any order.
