University of Manitoba - Englist, Film & Theatre - Media Lab - Media Lab Policies
Media Lab Policies
All workstations and equipment are available for bookings up to a week in advance. They can be booked with the lab technician by calling (204) 474-7411, emailing the Media Lab Technician or showing up in person at 233 University College. The maximum amount of time you can book a workstation for is one half day during regular lab hours. After hours access is only available when an approved supervisor is available to open and close the Lab.
  1. Excessive noise is not permitted in the Lab at any time. When possible, use headphones to listen to your audio content.
  2. You may come to the Lab and use the facilities without prior notification if the workstation or equipment you wish to use is not booked. Relying on informal availability of computers is not recommended for deadline-sensitive course work.
  3. If you do not arrive within 15 minutes of your booked time or if you do not contact the technician to indicate a new arrival time, you will lose your booking. If you repeatedly do not arrive for your booked times, you may lose booking privileges.
  4. Course related projects and University projects for English, Film, and Theatre students take priority. Students in the Department of English, Film and Theatre may work on independent and personal projects in the Lab, but your time may be pre-empted by course-related work at the Director/Technician's discretion. Students and staff from other departments will have very limited access privileges to the workstations.
  5. Do not install any software on the computers under any circumstances. Make software requests to the lab technician.
  6. Save data in the designated workspace in a folder labelled with your name. (If you need assistance, ask a course instructor, the lab technician, or the film technician.)
  7. Do not leave files on the computers for extended periods of time. Files will not be kept past the end of term. A Mac OS formatted external drive is highly recommended for any student doing work in the Lab.
  8. The Media Lab is not responsible for lost, damaged, or deleted files.
  9. The Media Lab is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen personal property in the lab. Do not leave your belongings unattended in the Lab.
  10. Food is not permitted in the lab. Drinks with lids are acceptable.
  11. Ultimately, be clean, respectful, and leave the lab as you found it.
  12. Any behaviour that contravenes these rules may lead to suspension of lab access.
