GENERAL INFORMATION
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

English is the language of instruction and communication at the University of Manitoba.  The University and the Faculty of Graduate Studies determines the English requirements for a student to be successful in their graduate program.  In some cases, Departments will have higher English language requirements for their programs.

  1. If applicable, qualifying English Language Exam scores are required as an primary requirement for admission
    • A qualifying English Language Exam scores MUST be receipted before an applicant can be considered for admissions review
    • Admissions Applications are NOT evaluated until qualifying English language exam scores are RECEIVED 
  2. After receiving tentative acceptance from a professor in ECE, documented proof of qualifying English Language Exam scores must be submitted WITH the online Admissions application.
    • Admissions Applications submitted without qualifying English Language Exam scores is considered incomplete and cannot be processed
  3. EXPIRATION OF TEST SCORES:   Scores more than two years old are not acceptable.

Tentative Approval for admissions by an academic advisor within ECE or the submission of an application and payment of processing fees is not a guarantee admissions to the Graduate Program. All applications are reviewed by the Department and the Faculty of Graduate Studies.  Final approval rests with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

All students are responsible for the content of their Admissions Application and in making sure that the instructions and procedures are followed for the proper submission of an Admissions Application which includes obtaining Tentative Acceptance from a professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer in advance of the submission of an official admissions application.

Intensive Academic English Program
(IAEP):  Level 5

 

Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP) - minimum, overall score of 65% is required. 
(PLEASE CHECK SCORE REQUIREMENT with the FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES to make sure this score requirement is current). 

If the IAEP program is taken at the University of Manitoba, in order to qualify to gain admissions to the Graduate Program students MUST register for IAEP 5 and MUST PASS THE COURSE -- in this case the course is equivalent to taking one of the recommended English Language Proficiency Exam -- no additional English Language Proficiency Exam is required.

PERMANENT RESIDENTS (P.R.), REFUGEE CLAIMANTS, PROVINCIAL NOMINEES

 

  • All students must who do not quality for English Language Exam Exemption must submit a current, qualifying English Language Exam taken within the last 2-years
  • Students must receive passing scores (see Language Requirements) before your application can be considered for Admissions    
  • Acceptable English Language Exam 
  • WELARC (Winnipeg English Language & Referral Centre) for English evaluation:

    • If you are not able to pass an English Language Exam please visit WELARC for FREE evaluation, classes, or class information
    • Qualifications for WELARC Assistance:  Applicants must be Manitoba residents who are:  
      • Permanent Residents or Canadian citizens born outside Canada
      • Refugee Claimants 
      • Provincial Nominees
        (including spouses and adult children) who have received their letter of approval from the province of Manitoba

  1. NOTE:  Qualifying English Language Exam scores are required as a basis for admission evaluation.  We cannot evaluate Application Applications without the recept of qualifying English Language Exam scores. Documented proof of qualifying English Language Exam scores must be submitted WITH an online admissions application. Please note: scores more than two years old are not acceptable.
  2. PLAN AHEAD (DEADLINES):   Please make sure you apply and sit for your English Language Exam to allow you to submit qualifying English Language Exam scores least one(1) month Admissions Application Deadline Date
  3. SENDING YOUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE EXAMS:   Please request that your examining organization submit your scores to
