IN ALL INSTANCES...
- DEADLINE: At least
- The Faculty must receive the Transfer Request from the Department at least FOUR TERMS PRIOR (including Summer term) from the start of the Master’s program
- The request to transfer from a Master’s to the Ph.D. program must be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies at least one (1) month prior to the term for which the student intends to commence the Ph.D. program.
- RECOMMENDATION: The Academic Advisor MUST recommend a Master of Science student to a Ph.D. program
- TRANSFERS are only allowed within Departments

- GPA: A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required and the student must be in GOOD STANDING
- COURSEWORK: Completed in the Master's Program would normally be counted in the Ph.D. Program
- REGISTRATION: DO NOT REGISTER in the term in which you plan to begin your new program until your transfer has been approved and your Aurora is showing that you are now in the Ph.D. program. In most cases we will need to paper register you -- the paper process will take approximately 1-2 weeks to process once we submit to FGS.
- TIME IN THE GRADUATE PROGRAM: Time spent in the Master's Program would normally be counted in the Ph.D. Program.
- EXAMPLE: If you have been in the Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering's Master's Program for ~1-year, 1-year is subtracted from your Ph.D. Program.
- The maximum time in the Ph.D. Program is 6 years
- If you spent 1-year in the BME M.Sc. Program THAT ONE YEAR is considered a year in your Ph.D. Program
- The time left in your Ph.D. Program is then 5-year
- UMGF: Transfers will usually impact awards. As per the award paperwork you signed, if you held the UMGF during your M.Sc. and are now transferring to a Ph.D. program you will, unfortunately, loose your UMGF when you transfer to the Ph.D. program.
