KEYNOTE   6:00ANDREW TODD Action, Energy, Performance, Ecology: Notes on a New Functionalism

If, as Aristotle asserted, “action…is the most important thing of all,” then contemporary
architecture seems set on the obverse: bloated, cavorting, lumpen spaces designed
merely to be photographed, where actual human action is all but absent. This is bad
enough in itself, but much worse when we consider the disconnect between space and
need, and the extravagant consumption of energy and resources that building
represents. Looking at examples from the theatre and elsewhere, this talk proposes a
counter-model which recaptures and redefines ‘functionalism’ for our challenged times.
