Atmosphere invites proposals for academic papers, presentations of film, video and other media, and creative/public events in association with the symposium. These may be presented at the University of Manitoba, or in the city; candidates are invited to propose either of these locations.

Academic papers

Themes and approaches may include (but are not limited to):
  • - Cinema as a mode of understanding the city;
  • - Documentaries focused on urban society and form;
  • - Fictional film and video;
  • - Media as a basis of art, architecture, interiors, landscape and urban design;
  • - Urban sound;
  • - Community voice: photography, video, radio, audio;
  • - The image of the city;
  • - Mapping;
  • - Psychogeographies and the digital city;
  • - The phenomenology of new media.
Atmosphere will also consider panels of 3-4 related papers on a topic of the panelists' choice.

Deadlines: Proposals for individual presentations or panels should be submitted by October 15, 2010.  Please provide an abstract of no more than 500 words plus relevant bibliographic references for each presentation or panel (and one for each participant on a panel). Applicant will be notified about acceptance by the end of October, 2010.

Urban installations + gallery shows
(provisional title "Hot Spots")

We foresee a network of media-related urban installations and gallery shows as part of Mediated Cities, and invite proposals for contributions to this network. We anticipate publicizing this network online and with walking maps; contributors can submit websites or contact information for inclusion in this publicity.

Urban installations: Proposals should be site-specific and should demonstrate feasibility in terms of public access, security, weather, functionality, funding, and proposed coordination with local communities, businesses or institutions.

Gallery shows: Showings can be either solo or group, and related to the themes of Mediated Cities.

Deadlines: Proposals should be submitted by October 15, 2010. Text should not exceed 500 words, however, visual materials may also be included.  Atmosphere will review all proposals and make a preliminary selection of installations and shows by the end of October 2010. Artists must confirm a venue in writing by the end of November 2010.

Funding

Atmosphere is seeking funding to assist some participants to attend the symposium. To be eligible for this funding, proposals should be submitted as early as possible in the process.
