Retirement before July 1, 2004

For staff members who retire on or  before July 1, 2004, the eligibility requirements are:

  • age 55 or older, and
  • held a continuing full-time position and
  • have had full-time group insurance for 10 continuous years prior to their date of retirement.

Premium payment

The University of Manitoba currently pays for premiums for this group of retired staff members. Supplementary Health coverage terminates at age 75. Dental coverage continues for the lifetime of the retired staff member.

Retirement after July 1, 2004

For staff members who retire after July 1, 2004, the requirements provisions are:

  • age 55 or older, and
  • held a continuing full-time position and
  • have had full-time group insurance coverage for 10 continuous years prior to their date of retirement.

Premium payment

For retired staff members who have greater than 20 years of full-time participation in the group insurance programs, the retired staff member will pay 50 per cent of the cost of retiree premiums to age 75 and 100 per cent after age 75.

For retired staff members who have greater than 10 years of full-time participation in the group insurance programs but less than 20 years, the retired staff member will pay 100 per cent of the cost.

Optional extended life insurance

The eligibility for optional extended life insurance is:

  • age 55 or older, and

  • held a continuing full-time position and
  • have had full-time group insurance coverage for 10 continuous years prior to their date of retirement.

Coverage terminates at the retired staff members age 71 for staff members who retired before or after July 1, 2004.

Premium payment

The entire cost of any optional extended life insurance is the retired staff member's responsibility.

The premium rates for this coverage are age-related and are identical to the rates for active staff members. The rates are reviewed annually and depending on the claims experience, the insurer will adjust the premiums accordingly.
