Part-Time Retiree Benefits

There are two different eligibility provisions for part-time retiree benefits (Supplementary Health and Dental).

Retirement Before July 1, 2004

For those staff members who retire on or before July 1, 2004, the eligibility provisions are:

  • age 55 or older, and
  • held a continuing part-time position and
  • have had part-time group insurance for 10 continuous years prior to their date of retirement.

Premium Payment

The University of Manitoba currently pays for premiums for this group of retired staff members. Supplementary Health coverage terminates at age 75. Dental coverage continues for the lifetime of the retired staff member.

Retirement After July 1, 2004

For those staff members who retire after July 1, 2004, the eligibility provisions are:

  • age 55 or older, and
  • held a continuing part-time position and
  • have had part-time group insurance coverage for 10 continuous years prior to their date of retirement.

Premium Payment

For retired staff members who have greater than 20 years of part-time participation in the group insurance programs, the retired staff member will pay 50% of the cost of retiree premiums to age 75 and 100% after age 75.

For retired staff members who have greater than 10 years of part-time participation in the group insurance programs but less than 20 years, the retired staff member will pay 100% of the cost.

Optional Extended Life

The eligibility for Optional Extended Life is:

  • age 55 or older, and
  • held a continuing part-time position and
  • have had part-time group insurance coverage for 10 continuous years prior to their date of retirement.

Coverage terminates at the retired staff members age 71 for staff members who retired before or after July 1, 2004.

Premium Payment

The entire cost of any Optional Extended Life Insurance is the retired staff member's responsibility.

The premium rates for this coverage are age-related and are identical to the rates for active staff members. The rates are reviewed annually and depending on the claims experience, the insurer will adjust the premiums accordingly.
