Orientation - Frequently Asked Questions

When is Orientation?
Orientation runs for two days, September 6th & 7th, 2011.  We have two fun-filled days planned for you, so be sure to be in your homerooms at 9:00 a.m. both days.

Do I need to come to Orientation?
Yes.  All first year U1 students should attend Orientation.  The information presented during U1 Orientation is critical to your success in your academic career.

Do I attend both days of Orientation?
Yes.  You won't want to miss out on all Orientation has to offer such as Academic Session, a free MTS "Grazing Grounds" BBQ, the Student Resource Festival, a caricature artist, prizes, and much more!

How do I register for Orientation?
You are automatically registered for Orientation when you register for your university courses.  New U1 students begin registering for university courses in July after completing the Start@U1 Online Tutorial

What will I do during Orientation?
You will attend Homeroom sessions each morning with about 30-50 other new students.  You will have 2-3 Student Leaders (who are current U of M students) with your group who will be with you throughout the two days.  They can fill you in about the U of M and answer any questions you may have.  Student leaders can show your group the best places to eat, study, find resources, and get involved on campus.  They will also give you a student perspective on what to expect and how to make the most out of your time at the University of Manitoba.

You will also attend Academic Sessions and a campus tour that will help answer your questions and give you information that will prepare you for the responsibilities of becoming a university student.

You will have a chance to visit the Student Resource Festival (enter to win some amazing prizes)!

During the two days of Orientation you will also have time to participate in activities and enjoy the entertainment at the "Party on the Prairie" (on the Pedway): Live local bands, free MTS "Grazing Grounds" BBQ, free caricature artist and so much more!

What types of things will I learn about in the Bison Basic and Beyond the Basic Sessions?
In the Bison Basic and Beyond the Basic Sessions, you will learn a variety of skills required for success in your university classes. Some topics included are: how to avoid plagiarism, campus policies, how to take good notes, writing university papers, how to use the libraries, how to get connected to the many resources on campus, and specific U1 student information ! After Orientation, you will understand university life and know where to find help when school starts !  Bison Basic Sessions are mandatory and Beyond the Basic Sessions are optional.

How do I register for a Beyond the Basic Session?
You can register online to attend the Beyond the Basic session (BBS) in the afternoon of September 6th.  Pre-Registration is not mandatory, but highly recommended.  Online Registration will be available starting mid-August. When you register for a BBS, you are reserving a seat at the session.  If you don't sign up in advance, you may still attend the Beyond the Basic Session, however seats may not be available.

Do I have to attend all session?
All Bison basic Sessions are mandatory for students to attend.  Students will be given tickets to drop off at each session, so we can keep track of attendance at session.  You will attend Bison Basic Sessions with your homeroom and Student Leaders in the mornings of September 6th and 7th.  Beyond the Basic Sessions are optional and are held on September 6th in the afternoon.

What is the Student Resource Festival?
You won't want to miss the Student Resource Festival that will be held on the Pedway on September 7th, 2011.  The SRF will showcase faculties, departments and other off-campus resources.  Along with answering questions for students, each booth will have a game or prize for you! Don't forget to stop by for the free MTS "Grazing Grounds" BBQ happening during the Student Resource Festival!

I am a Mature Student and can't attend the 2-day Orientation.  Is there another option for Mature Students?
Yes! There is a Mature Student Orientation on September 7th from 6 - 9 p.m. All new students who are registered as a Mature Student, and who are unable to attend the 2 day Orientation have the option of coming to the evening session.  The Mature Student Orientation will be a breakdown of the main aspects of U1 Orientation.  it is highly recommended to come to the U1 Orientation on September 6th and 7th as it is more comprehensive and allows you to explore campus in more detail before classes starts.  However, if you do decide to come to the evening session, please e-mail U1_orientation@umanitoba.ca with your full name and student number to register by August 29, 2011.

What is the Pedway?
The "Pedway" is a walkway that extends from University Centre, heading West all the way to the Frank Kennedy/Extended Education Complex.  The Pedway is the hub of activity and excitement during U1 Orientation.  Here you can enjoy entertainment, prizes, and more!

When will I hear more about Orientation?
We send out a detailed letter in mid-August telling you the location of your homeroom, a schedule of activities for the two days, a map, and a checklist of what of what to bring.

Who do I contact if I have questions or concerns about Orientation?
If you have any questions regarding what to expect during Orientation please contact the Orientation Office.
