Probation

Probation is intended to alert students that their current academic strategy is not working, and it is a reminder that all students should be actively seeking help from University 1 Academic Advisors and U1 Student Help Centre at the first sign of problems in their classes.

Whether it is a subject matter or time management issue, exam anxiety, or a course planning question, University 1 Academic Advisors and Help Centre staff are a student's best resource to find help and achieve success.

Probation Conditions:

When students have completed 24 credit hours of classes, their grades are officially assessed by University 1. If a student's GPA is less than a 2.0 (C average), they are placed on Probation.

While on Probation, a student must:

  •  achieve a minimum GPA of 2.0 or C in each individual term of study (Term GPA) in order to continue to the next term and avoid Suspension. Students must meet this minimum grade requirement until their overall GPA improves to 2.0 or above*.

It may take more than one academic term for a student to improve their overall GPA and be taken off of Probation. This means that Probation students must make sound decisions and seek help from University 1 before starting each term of study and must take action at the first sign of difficulties.

  • attend a University 1: Formula For Success Workshop which addresses the academic and personal issues Probation students often struggle with. The workshop will show students new ways to develop a personal plan and outlines strategies to sucessfully work toward a target faculty. A hold will be placed on all new Probation student's Aurora accounts preventing further registration until they have attended a workshop.

*Visit the Resources/Tools For U1 Students page for GPA information and the GPA Calculator.

University 1 Formula For Success Workshops

As part of University 1's Probation programming, all new students placed on Probation will be required to attend a Formula For Success Workshop led by a University 1 Academic Advisor.

Click the link above for the workshop schedule and more information.

You do not need to pre-register for a workshop. Attend one of the scheduled workshops and fill-out the sign-in sheet provided by the Advisor leading the workshop.

*If you have previously attended a workshop you are welcome, but not required, to attend a second time. All students, however, are encouraged to see University 1 for help making their academic plan anytime during the year.
