Exam Deferrals

Deferred examinations may be granted to students who are unable to write a final exam (as scheduled by the Student Records Office) for any of the following reasons:

  • Medical
  • Compassionate

If you miss a scheduled final exam, you must apply for a deferral with the University 1 Student Help Centre and provide supporting documentation within 7 working days of the end of the exam period.

Please note:

  • Travel is not considered grounds for a deferral (don't book airline/travel tickets anticipating that your exam times can be changed!);
  • Deferrals are not normally given before an exam or in advance of the exam period;
  • University 1 will review your request for final exams only*;
  • After receiving approval for a deferred exam, students must check with the appropriate department(s) immediately to determine when the exam will be re-scheduled;
  • Deferred exams are to be written within 30 days of the end of the original exam period. If, due to illness or other circumstances, you are not able to write the exam within 30 days, the exam will be written at the department's discretion, possibly at the end of the next academic term.

*Requests to defer mid-term tests written during the lecture period are at the discretion of the professor and/or department; see University 1 Regulations, Section 4 of the U of M Undergraduate Calendar.

 DEFERRALS ARE NOT TO YOUR ACADEMIC BENEFIT

You are resposible for any changes in content or format between the original test date and the deferred exam. There may be a significant amount of time between the end of lectures and writing the deferred exam if you are unable to write within 30 days.

Documentation Requirements:

  • Official documentation must specifically state why an exam was missed - general statements about "school" or "work" are not acceptable;
  • Acceptable official documentation includes medical certificates, police reports, letters from doctors/counsellors, obituary notices or death certificates; Click here for documentation guide;
  • Dates indicated on all documentation must be inclusive of the date(s) of the missed exam.
