30 credit hours (or 15 credit hours per term) in the Fall/Winter session is the maximum number of credit hours that a University 1 student can register for. This is considered a 100% coursleoad. Students may be permitted to exceed this limit in the second term if their first term performance indicates that the increased time and academic demands can be managed.
It is important that students understand that increasing the maximum number of credit hours beyond the normal limit is a very heavy workload and may have an adverse affect on their GPA.
When a request to exceed the credit hour limit is made by students, it is done so at their own risk - final grades cannot be be appealed based on having a credit hour overload.
For permission to exceed the credit hour limit, students must meet with a University 1 Academic Advisor.
Did you know...
The study guideline used by academic advisors suggests that for every 1 hour spent in lectures, a student should spend 2 hours studying independently on their own.
This means each 3 credit hour course requires 9 hours per week of lecture and study time in order to achieve satisfactory grades.
If a student received permission to take 18 credit hours in one term, that would mean at least 54 hours per week would be spent on lectures and studying. That would be almost 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, devoted to lectures and study - and this does not include time spent in labs!
