About the program

The SLDP values a diverse view of leadership, acknowledging that many theories, ideas, models, and concepts have contributed to the complex understanding that is accepted today.  Knowing this, the program will not attempt to provide a generalized definition of leadership. Instead, the following Guiding Principles have been identified as common concepts between a variety of leadership works that also align with the values of the Student Experience and Development Office.  These Guiding Principles are the foundational ideas that the SLDP is built on to encourage an expanded and holistic view of leadership. 

  • Leadership is defined individually based on one's own values  
  • Leadership requires a commitment to continual learning and personal growth   
  • Leadership is a collaborative process, and must be viewed within the context of its environment 
  • Leadership development should be accessible and inclusive

The SLDP welcomes graduate or undergraduate students from any faculty, background, and experience level. If you are in your last term, or only interested in taking select workshops please contact us to discuss possible options. 

Level one: Leadership Theory and Exploration

This level of the SLDP focuses on identity development related to leadership. Participants will engage with a set of five core workshops and their choice of one elective workshop. To complete this level, participants must complete all of the requirements within a three-year period.

 

Core requirements

The completion of the following workshops are a requirement for level one of the SLDP.

  • Looking at Leadership: An Introduction to Leadership as a Concept (must be taken first)
  • One of: 
    1. Leading with Relationships: Interpersonal Leadership Theories in Action   
    2. Leading from Within: Intrapersonal Leadership Theories in Action  
    3. Navigating Leadership Landscapes: Context Leadership Theories in Action 
  • EDIA Essentials: Foundational Concepts for Leadership
  • Effective Communication Strategies and Skills   
  • Leading with a Purpose: Developing a Personal Leadership Model  (must be taken last)

Elective requirements

Participants must complete one of the following workshops as a requirement for level one of the SLDP.

  • Leading Together: A Workshop on Teamwork and Team Building  
  • Influence and Power Through a Leadership Lens  
  • Leading with Integrity: Examining Ethics in Leadership  
  • Exploring Leadership Identity: What Makes a Leader?  
  • Managing Difficult Conversations with Confidence  
  • Critical Conversations for Leadership in a Colonial Institution  
  • Balanced Leadership: The Importance of Self-Compassion

Skill development areas

The SLDP is development in nature and designed in such a way that through active engagement with level one of the program, participants will gain competence in the following areas: 

  • Attentive listening 
  • Critical thinking 
  • Curiosity 
  • Self-awareness 
  • Verbal communication

Eligibility

The SLDP welcomes graduate or undergraduate students from any faculty, background, and experience level. Please note that to register for workshops participants must be current UM students who are enrolled in a minimum of one 3-credit hour course.

Level two: Applied Leadership Learning

This level of the SLDP focuses on the practical application of skills and knowledge gained in level one. Participants will complete a set of two core workshops and their choice of one elective workshop. This level will also include an applied learning element and optional monthly group reflection sessions. Students must complete level one of the program, prior to starting level two. To complete this level, participants must complete all of the requirements within a three-year period.

Core requirements

The completion of the following components are a requirement for level two of the SLDP.

Workshops:

  • Critical Conversations for Leadership in a Colonial Institution  
  • Application of your Personal Leadership Model

Applied Learning Element

Elective requirements

Participants must complete one of the following workshops as a requirement for level two of the SLDP. The elective session must be different from the elective session that was completed as a requirement for level one of the program. Participants may also elect to attend optional monthly reflection sessions.

  • Leading Together: A Workshop on Teamwork and Team Building  
  • Influence and Power Through a Leadership Lens  
  • Leading with Integrity: Examining Ethics in Leadership  
  • Exploring Leadership Identity: What Makes a Leader?  
  • Managing Difficult Conversations with Confidence
