SAS provides accommodations to students with documented disabilities. Accommodations refer to any service, equipment, or special arrangement that is put in place to support students’ activities at the University of Manitoba. All accommodations must be recommended and verified by an appropriate professional. The documentation required is dependent on the student’s disability type. SAS has specific forms and guidelines for medical documentation that are available at our office or on our website.
SAS offers on-campus, in-class and test/exam accommodations. The most common accommodations are: on campus transportation, American Sign Language/English interpretation, note-takers, extended time for test/exams, and e-mail notification to instructors about accommodations. Because accommodations are tailored to each individual, students must first meet with an Accessibility Advisor to determine appropriate accommodations while at the University of Manitoba.
Students are strongly encouraged to register at SAS as early as possible to avoid a delay in service. First year students should register upon receiving acceptance to the University of Manitoba. Students should not wait until school starts in September. Early registration ensures that SAS will be able to arrange support and accommodations.
In order to register, you should call, email or drop in to the Student Accessibility Services office to make an appointment. During your appointment you and the SAS staff member can decide which accommodations are appropriate for you.
SAS requires a letter, assessment, or Medical documentation from your physician, specialist, or counselor. Your medical documentation must include:
-
A clinical diagnosis of the student’s disability or disorder, the name of the diagnostician,
-
and the date of testing.
-
Indicators of how the disability affects the student.
-
A recommendation of what accommodations the student would require for daily functioning at the U of M (i.e. extended time for tests, table in the classroom).
-
Indicate the duration of the disability (i.e. permanent or temporary), also how long the accommodations should be provided for the students.
If you or your medical specialist are unsure about the type of information to provide, please contact the office directly. The form linked here can be used by your physician, specialist, or counselor to give SAS the information needed to provide you with accommodation. Click here to view the form.
