NEED TO KNOW: if you are missing high school prerequisites in Biology, Chemistry, Math, or Physics, you can take courses at the U of M to meet those requirements while you are working on your degree.
- Know what courses are available to you. If you are a University 1 student, choose classes based on your target faculty or school as outlined in your University 1 Start Book. Check it out at: umanitoba.ca/u1/startbook
Students in direct entry programs other than U1 will still have the option to include electives from a variety of faculties/schools offered through U1. Please review your program specific registration information for details.
- Learn to read course numbers. All courses are identified by their course number and department name. Introductory level courses are indicated by course numbers in the 1000s. ENGL 1200 for example is an introductory level English course. Most second level (2000) courses require completion of the prerequisite introductory level (1000) course. Course numbers beginning with a zero, such as ENGL 0930 , are preparatory and may not be acceptable for credit in all faculties or schools.
- Review course descriptions & requirements. Course information is available through the Course Catalog in Aurora Student (aurora.umanitoba.ca) or the Undergraduate Calendar (umanitoba.ca/calendar)
- Make a list of the classes you want to take. Your course list should be based on your target faculty. Students in U1 can find more information on the courses they can take within the Start Book (umanitoba.ca/u1/startbook)
- Determine when courses are being offered using Aurora Student. You can do a course search using the Course Catalog (course descriptions) and Class Schedule (when courses are offered) on Aurora Student. If a course has a lab component, make note of the lab times as well.
Creating your own timetable. Using a timetable planning form and the information obtained through Aurora Student, create a schedule that meets your needs. Lecture sections are marked with an “A”, for example “PSYC 1200 A01”. Lab sections are marked with a “B”, for example, “CHEM 1300 B01”. Find timetable planning forms in the U1 Start Book or online.
NEED TO KNOW: Timetable planning forms are available for download at umanitoba.ca/student/u1/resources/64.htm
