APPLICATION PROCEDURES - OUTBOUND EXCHANGE STUDENTS

APPLICATION FORMS

A completed application includes:

  • Application form (please type or print neatly);
    • Please email the Exchange Office for the most up-to-date application form and instructions.
  • Two reference forms (download a pdf version of the Reference Form here);
    • One of your references must be from a professor and relevant to your academic performance.
    • References may write a letter instead of using the reference form.
  • Personal essay (250-500 words);
    • Introduce yourself, your strengths and interests, and explain why you feel you are a strong candidate for the exchange program.  Please be sure to include how you expect the exchange will impact you academically and personally, and how the experience is related to your goals.
  • Transcripts from the University of Manitoba;
    • A printout of your web transcript from Aurora is acceptable.
  • $150.00 application fee;
    • If you later choose to decline our Offer of Exchange, $100 will be refunded to you.
  • A recent photo of yourself.

All eligible applicants will be interviewed following submission of their application.
 

APPLICATION PERIODS

January 10th – February 1st:   Main application due date for all exchanges during the following academic year (Fall and Winter terms).

March 1st - August 30th:    Applications for remaining Winter term exchange destinations will be considered in the order they are submitted.

October 15th:   Application due date for exchanges to Kokugakuin University and Saga University in Japan during the following academic year. There are scholarships associated with these exchanges that require an earlier selection process.

SELECTION PROCESS

A selection committee will review all application packages and interview notes. Students will be selected and ranked according to a number of criteria including:

  • GPA
    • Applicants should have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.  Case-by-case exceptions may be allowed by the selection committee.
  • Year of study
    • Applicants must be enrolled in a faculty or school (not U1) during their time on exchange.
    • Applicants must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours of university courses.
    • Preference may be given to students who are in their 3rd or 4th year of study.
  • Personal suitability
    • How well the exchange fits with the applicant’s course of study, personal goals and strengths.
    • Student is able to show they can adapt to living and studying in a foreign culture.
  • References
  • Foreign language proficiency when applicable

PLEASE NOTE

  • Some exchange destinations are more popular than others; applicant selection for these institutions is competitive.
  • Every year, there are exchange opportunities that go unused. If you meet the eligibility requirements, we encourage you to visit or contact the Exchange Office to discuss the opportunities that best fit your academic needs and personal interests.
  • Going on exchange requires a good deal of planning, so if you are even considering going on exchange, we highly recommend that you meet with an Exchange Advisor early on in your studies.  This will help you explore options for incorporating an exchange into your program of study.
