ABOUT THE GAAPS CONFERENCE
The Gathering of Accounting Associates, Professionals, and Students (otherwise known as GAAPS) Conference was established nine years ago by the Asper School of Business Accounting Association in conjunction with CGA Manitoba. Currently this event still provides an opportunity for students to compete in an accounting focused case competition. However, the conference also includes interactive sessions where guest speakers discuss relevant accounting topics and issues, as well as a gala dinner featuring a guest speaker in the accounting field.

In the past three years, the GAAPS conference has grown from an exclusively University of Manitoba conference, to last year’s conference which saw the presence of seven universities from three provinces: University of Manitoba, Assiniboine College, University of Calgary, Lakehead University, University of Toronto, Windsor University, and University of Waterloo. This year, ASBAA plans to build on this success and host even more teams from Manitoba, as well as from the rest of Canada. In order to accommodate the interest in the event GAAPS has been expanded from the usual two day event to three days. Furthermore, the event has been relocated from the University of Manitoba to a prestigious downtown hotel in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

GAAPS 2012
This year, GAAPS is being held at the Delta Hotel in the heart of downtown Winnipeg. The GAAPS conference, also known as the Gathering of Accounting Associates, Professionals and Students, will be held from February 2 – February 4, 2012. It will include a case competition, luncheon, wine & cheese, and a Gala Dinner involving students, faculty members, and accounting professionals.

GAAPS provides an excellent way for students to showcase their accounting and business savvy. Competition will take place in teams of four in the case competition, which is judged by accounting professors and industry practitioners. Prizes will be awarded to the top competitors. The conference includes an interactive discussion presented by industry professionals. The day is closed with a Wine & Cheese and Gala Dinner at the University Club, which allows students, academics, and industry professionals to socialize in an informal setting.

Reasons to Participate
- Provides the opportunity to compete and win cash prizes in the Case Competition.
- Provides the opportunity to present a case in front of corporate representatives from some of the largest corporations in Manitoba.
- Introduces students to accounting issues in a case form, preparing them with the tools necessary to solve real-world accounting problems.
- Allows students to meet accounting academics and professionals and to make contacts in an expanding market for accountants.
- Provides networking opportunities for accounting students from across Canada and the Northern United States.

How to Volunteer
The time is coming near to our Annual GAAPS Conference and we need YOUR help!
GAAPS was established 10 years ago by ASBAA and it has been a great success over the years. The conference has grown from exclusively Manitoba students, to business students across Canada. In order for GAAPS to function smoothly, and for us to provide the best experience for everyone involved, we do require extra help. As a result, we are currently in need of volunteers to help facilitate the event.

We are looking for about 10-15 volunteers for the following positions:
  • Team Hosts
Individuals will be assigned to a specific team that they will be required to pick up from the airport and bring them to the downtown location on Thursday, February 3rd and drop them back off at the airport on Sunday, February 6th. Throughout the conference, the individual will be assisting their assigned team with any questions or concerns thatthey may have, and directing them to where they need to be.
    * Individuals must own or have access to a vehicle.

  • Greeters
Individuals will be responsible for greeting sponsors, judges, and guests as they arrive, directing them to the appropriate locations, as well as addressing any questions or concerns that they may have. They need to be avaliable Thursday, Friday, & Saturday (during the day).

  • ASBAA Council Assistants
Individuals will be responsible for assisting each of the ASBAA council members in various logistical tasks that may arise during the conference.

In return for their invaluable assistance in helping us host the event, volunteers will receive entry to the Gala Dinner, the CGA Meet & Greet, the Cocktail Party, the Saturday Night Social, as well as the opportunity to network with business students from across Canada!

This fantastic event will also provide you with the opportunity to get involved in the business community and to represent the Asper School of Business. If volunteering at this year's GAAPS conference interests you, please specify your position of interest and the dates and times that you are available.

Any additional questions or concerns can also be addressed by emailing Marlo Ostrow, GAAPS Logistics Coordinator, at marlo2585@gmail.com.
