Academic English Programs - For students wanting to enter an English language university, at either the undergraduate or graduate level, the English Language Centre (ELC) offers intensive English language instruction.

Intensive English Program - The Intensive English Program (IEP) is designed for beginner to advanced level students who want to study English with people from all over the world while experiencing Manitoba.

 

Academic English Programs

For students wanting to enter an English language university, at either the undergraduate or graduate level, the English Language Centre (ELC) offers intensive English language instruction. Programs and courses focus on the skills and competencies required for university student success. The ELC provides two programs to assist students as they learn and transition into university studies.

The Full Time Intensive Academic English (IAEP) program:

  • Operates 3 times per year.
  • Emphasizes the skills necessary for success in a university; such as listening to lectures, learning new vocabulary, practising reading strategies, giving presentations and writing essays.

The Advanced Level 5: Academic English for University and College Entrance (AEPUCE) program:

  • Operates 3 times per year.
  • Provides direct entrance into the University of Manitoba.
  • Prepares students for entrance into other English universities.
  • Emphasizes academic functions required by English universities; such as listening to lectures, taking notes, discussing academic ideas, reading for analysis, using library resources, and writing research papers.
  • Gives students confidence to participate in a university setting.

The ELC also:

  • Delivers first- year university support classes for; pronunciation, conversation seminars and presentations, critical reading and summary writing, essays, grammar review, research writing for graduate students, and writing university research papers. These are offered in fall, winter, spring and summer.
  • Provides English Language Testing: CanTEST©.
  • Delivers cultural and sports activities.

Intensive English Program

The Intensive English Program (IEP) is designed for beginner to advanced level students who want to study English with people from all over the world while experiencing Manitoba. Seven levels of Intensive English Program sessions ranging in lengths from four weeks to 12 months and consisting of 25 hours of classroom instruction per week are offered throughout the year. Academic instruction, oral language experiences, and Experience Manitoba activities constitute the basis of this program. The courses focus on relevant, interactive lessons that inspire student learning.

The Intensive English Program (IEP):

  • Emphasizes intensive oral, reading, writing, and listening practice at increasing levels of complexity.
  • Offers iB TOEFL preparation courses several times a year and has recently become an official iB TOEFL testing site.
  • Provides housing in residence on campus or with a homestay family, depending upon student preference.
  • Incorporates the most advanced audio-visual equipment, including a computer language laboratory.
  • Provides oral language experiences to help students use their second language in informal, natural settings.

The English Language Studies Area also:

  • Offers a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (CTESL) to meet the needs of individuals who are pursuing a teaching career in ESL.
  • Offers a Language and Business Certificate Program for students who are interested in taking business and management courses in addition to their English program.
