If you are a U of M student in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and you are preparing for a thesis presentation, you are eligible to participate in ThesisSPEAK (Sessions to Practise English And communicate Knowledge clearly) offered by the English Language Centre at the U of M.

The program is partially funded by the English Language Centre, so your total fee is only $30.00 for three 50-minute sessions ($10.00 per session) one-on-one with an English instructor, Cheryl Bodnarus. The focus is on comprehensibility so that communication is clear.

Questions and Answers about ThesisSPEAK

  1. Q: What is the focus of ThesisSPEAK?
    A: The focus is on achieving complete comprehensibility (understandability) when speaking English so that knowledge is communicated clearly.
  2. Q. What can I expect during the sessions?
    A. The sessions are one-on-one, so you and the instructor will be there. The instructor will listen to you as you speak about your thesis and will explain how to increase comprehensibility when needed.
  3. Q: Where are the sessions held?
    A: They are held at the U of M campus the student prefers, either the Fort Garry Campus (in the B-Lot Trailer, located east of the Elizabeth Dafoe Library) or the Bannatyne Campus, usually in the Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library. 
  4. Q. What should I take to the sessions?
    A. Have with you the materials you'll need for practising such as your notes on paper and/or a laptop.
  5. Q: When are the sessions held?
    A: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Some days and times aren't available because of holidays, other events, or previously scheduled sessions.
  6. Q: How do I register?
    A: The registration period is continuous throughout each term. Please submit the completed registration form and payment to the address at the bottom of the registration form.
  7. Q: What if I would like to make sure (before I register) that three session times that are okay for my schedule will be available?
    A: If you would like, you may e-mail your available times to to ask if/when your preferred times will be available.
  8. Q: What if I register but I don't receive a confirmation e-mail?
    A: If you don't receive an e-mail to confirm your registration within three business days after you register, then e-mail the English Language Centre at to make sure it was received.
  9. Q: After three sessions, can I register for three more sessions if I would like more practice?
    A: Yes, you may continue sessions if you register again. Each time you register, the registration process is the same.
