Language Partner Volunteer Program
 Language Partner Volunteer Program

The English Language Centre's Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP) at the University of Manitoba prepares international students who meet the academic admission criteria but not the English language proficiency requirements, to study in a degree program at the U of M.

Are you outgoing, friendly and interested in meeting people from different cultures? … then we have the program for you!

The Language Partner Volunteer Program matches volunteers with IAEP students to help them practice their informal listening and speaking skills. Volunteers also provide information to the students about adapting to Canadian culture in a friendly and casual setting.

How does the program work?

Each volunteer must commit to: meeting with their Language Partner for 1 hour per week for the duration of the academic term (no less than 7 hours total), attend a mandatory orientation session with their mentee, and provide the IAEP with feedback throughout the term. Volunteers can negotiate their own schedule of when to meet, but it must be in a public place. Volunteers must be willing and able to travel to meet their mentee, which is typically at the Fort Garry Campus of the University of Manitoba.

  • Volunteering is easy and open to students, alumni, staff and members of the community.
  • Volunteers are needed for fall, winter and summer terms.

As a partner, you will:

  • share your culture with an international student,
  • learn about another culture
  • meet new people and make friends,
  • practice cross-cultural communication,
  • enhance your resumé with this experience, and
  • get recognition on your Co-Curricular Record (U of M students).

Reference letters are available for volunteers who commit to two terms or more.

To participate, you must:

  • volunteer for a minimum of 7 hours in a term (approx. 1 hour per week),
  • work with your partner to find a time and place to meet on or near the Fort Garry campus,
  • meet in a public place,
  • be able to travel to meet your student,
  • have lived in Winnipeg for at least two years, and/or Canada for five years to have knowledge of the city, resources and culture, and
  • be fluent in both written and spoken English.
