Get advice on career planning, information on career options, and learn how to conduct an effective job search. Drop-in sessions are accessed on a first come - first served basis.

Some Tips for the Drop-In Sessions:

Career planning and information sessions are meant to assess your needs, get you started on a career planning process and provide you with additional resources. If required, an appointment will be scheduled  for a more in-depth conversation.

Prior to attending the session you are encouraged to use our online resources including career decision making and career information resources. Please bring the result of any assessments you complete to the session.

Individual drop-in sessions usually last 20 - 30 minutes and are available on a first come first serve basis with a set number of spaces available.

3) Our One-on-One Appointments

After looking at the resources and/or attending a drop-in session, you might have some more in-depth questions. You can meet one-on-one with a Career Consultant for a confidential discussion about your career strategy, CV, job search strategy and interview preparation.

Please Note: Professional school interview preparation sessions or workshops are scheduled throughout the year in advance of respective professional school interview dates.

Consultants can also lead Career Inventories or “testing” that can help you identify dozens of occupational options as well as a better understanding of your career needs. Career Services, in cooperation with Counselling Services, offers two career inventories: Strong Interest Inventory (SII) and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The SII focuses on interests while the MBTI focuses on personality factors. Each will identify occupational options for your consideration. Please note that there is a nominal fee for this service.

To book an individual appointment at Fort Garry or Bannatyne campus, call 204-474-9456.

4) Our Career Mentor Program

Hundreds of mentors, many of them University of Manitoba alumni, volunteer to meet with students for informational interviews and workplace tours. Students have the opportunity to learn more about occupations, explore industry sectors and identify potential future employers. Career Mentors share advice, personal experiences and provide realistic overviews of their professions. The program requires only a small commitment of time, but can have a substantial impact on career plans and success. Each student attends a short orientation session to help them prepare for the meeting. Applications can be filled out at 474 University Centre. A nominal, one-time fee applies. Start turning your career dreams into reality!

5) Our Events

  • Career Fairs. Check out two of our largest career events: Agricultural and Food Sciences and Engineering (ASE) Recruitment Fair in October and Annual Career Fair in January. Both are open to all students and alumni from the University of Manitoba.
  • Every January is Career Month and we have a list of workshops and events, see http://www.umanitoba.ca/student/counselling/cs-news-events.html
  • Various workshops are offered throughout the year. We promote them on Career Connect (register here if you don't have an account), Career Services News Section and the University of Manitoba Career Services Facebook page.
