Lab Assignment. Available as pdf.
Lab starts Thursday September 15, 2011 in room 302 Buller. Lab manuals are handed out in class
the first week of lectures. All essential lab related information is given
in the lab manual.

LAB INFORMATION
Class is divided alphabetically by last name into
TWO sections:
Section 1 (A-L) starts at 2:30 pm
Section 2 (M-Z) starts at 4:00 pm (some weeks may start earlier but not
week - check the schedule for exceptions)
If you want to switch sections, find someone in the other section to switch
with, then see me in room 414B Buller. There are only 30 seats and both
sections are full - last names checked the first day. May still need to
balance sections the first day of lab.
All basic information you need to know is in your lab manual.
I expect you to check the website on a regular bases.
Before coming to the first lab:
Prepare for practical phase contrast microscope quiz by reading microscope operation in appendix. Details given in lab manual - see content list.
Read list of possible projects - pick one from your section's list as first come, first served.
Read general instructions including lab report presentation (reports must be typed).
Read week 1 lab procedures.
Lab Data and Report
formats (Word): Soil Microbial Community
Project Experiment Outline, Soil Microbial Community Project Procedure Report, Lab
1 report, Lab 2
Ecoplate data sheet, Lab 4 Report. Save
Word format and open in Word to enter requested information. Concentration of Erythromicrobium ramosum E5 culture: 3.2 mg/ml.
Clarification: Lab 4 report due Thursday November 10.
Report spreadsheets (Excel): Lab
2 (class data is now available). Save spreadsheet and open in Excel to enter requested information. Caution when adding standard deviation bars to class data figure, the y-axis may automatically reset to minus value - change back to zero by right clicking on primary vertical axis.
Lab 3 Anoxygenic Phototrophic Bacteria: Photosynthetic Pigments Student data
TLC plates (acetone extracted samples). After opening copy/paste
jpg file into a Word document and if too large resize to fit. Your data may not be as expected - check other group's data. If your data is poor use another group's data and reference. Remember you want bacteriochlorophyll not just carotenoids.

See lab 2 appendix for additional instructions. If you encounter problems, use a different
browser or change settings. As
stated in your lab manual you need to remove any empty spaces at end of
data. This also applies to empty spaces in middle of data column (eg group
data information not submitted). Again just backspace to remove any empty
lines before importing data.
