Lab starts Friday September 16 (Section 1) and Sept 23 (Section 2), 2011 in rooms 201 and 204 Buller. See lab information below and lab manual schedule to determine your start time. Lab manuals are handed out in class
the first week of lectures. All essential lab related information is given
in the lab manual.

LAB INFORMATION
Class is divided alphabetically by last name into TWO sections:
Section 1 (M-Z) - see lab manual schedule for lab times.
Section 2 (A-L) - see lab manual schedule for lab times.
If you want to switch sections, find someone in the other
section to switch with, then see Dr. Cameron in room 414B Buller.
All basic information you need to start the lab is found in the lab manual.
Also check the lab website on a regular bases.

Acrylamide
polymerization - a practical approach by Paul
Menter, Bio-Rad Laboratories
Read lab report presentation section in general instructions at the beginning of your lab manual before doing your lab report. Lab reports must typed. This includes calculations. 10% of the mark subtracted for portion of report not typed.
Lab 1 The isolation and quantitation
of ubiquinone Report:
Lab 1 Report format (Word). Save file
and open in Word before entering required information.
Group Biochrom ubiquinone scan absorbance data (Excel): group 1, group 2, group 3, group 5, group 6, group 7, group 8, group 9, group 10, group 11, group 12, group 13, group 14, group 15, group 16, group 17, group 18, group 19, group 20, group 21, group 22, group 23, group 24. If reduced scan is not less than the oxidized scan at 275 nm then you need to borrow another group's data and reference for lab report. Also if you have negative oxidized scan at 275 nm, then you need to borrow another group's data and reference for lab report.
Lab 1 TLC results: group 1, group 2, group 3, group 5, group 6, group 7, group 8, group 9, group 10, group 11, group 12, group 13, group 14, group 15, group 16, group 17, group 18, group 19, group 20, group 21, group 22, group 23, group 24.
After opening copy/paste
jpg file into your lab report Word document and if too large resize to fit.
Lab 2 Red Blood Cell Membrane
Proteins:
Lab 2 Report format (Word). Save file
and open in Word before entering required information.
Lab 2 Report Excel spreadsheet (protein concentration determination and protein
molecular weight determination worksheet - tab at bottom of each worksheet). Save file and open
in Excel before entering requested information.
SDS-PAGE group results: Insert jpeg files into word document - right click the picture, copy image and
paste in Word document. If your group's data
is too light or too dark use another group's data but remember to state
borrowed data and give group #.
SDS-PAGE gel loading plan(pdf): Lab 204 Section 1, gel 1 and gel 2 (see gel lane label for final order) and Lab 201 Section 2, gel 1 and gel 2 (see gel lane label for final order). Note, gel 1 for lab 204 section 1 has part of the Benchmark protein ladder photo-shopped due to damage to part of ladder during drying.
SDS-PAGE gels: Section 1 (Room 204) gel 1 and gel 2, Section 2 (Room 201) gel 1 and gel 2.
When correlating
the bands on the BenchMark protein ladder (Ladder) with kDa size, use
the intense bands (20 and 50 kDa) to match intense bands in lab manual
figure of ladder. Room 204 (Section 1) ladder is missing the 15 and 10 kDa bands - have run off the bottom of both gel. All sections ignore light bands between 25 and 30 kDa and also between 40 and 50 kDa. On some gels there are other very light bands that should be ignored.
