JEFFREY SPALDING - NEUES BILD (ROTUNDA/WINNIPEG) 1976/2009 (September 2009 -- ongoing) - Neues Bild is an installation by Nova Scotia-based artist/curator Jeff Spalding that occupies the hexagonal space just outside Gallery One One One indefinitely. Spalding's instructions are to repaint the rotunda space with paint store "seconds." Spalding was an initiator in the 1970s of a process art movement in Canada called "layer painting."

BLACK BOX: VIDEO PROJECTIONS AT GALLERY ONE ONE ONE, September - March 2010/11

For the first time ever Gallery One One One's Autumn and Winter season will be exclusively devoted to exhibitions of video projection, during which the gallery will be transformed from a white cube into a black box. Gallery One One One Director Cliff Eyland will curate the shows with the assistance of Prof. Alex Poruchnyk, who will act as a curatorial consultant for this series.

JILLIAN MCDONALD: REDRUM: 29 Sept. - 31 Oct. 2010 (Opening reception Wednesday 29 September, 5-8 pm; Artist's talk: 8 pm; Residency: 29 September/5 October) Jillian Mcdonald shot parts of her next video during a residency at Gallery One One One. Meanwhile, her zombie video REDRUM is being shown at the Gallery. Cliff Eyland, Milena Placentile, John Massier and Stephen Snyder will contribute online catalogue essays to the exhibition. (NOTE: Volunteers are needed for the residency video shoot. Please contact Cliff Eyland, cliff.eyland@gmail.com.)

CAROLEE SCHNEEMANN: UP TO AND INCLUDING HER LIMITS 10 Nov. 2010 -14 Jan. 2011 (Opening reception 5-7 pm at Gallery One One One. Schneemann's talk/performance, co-sponsored by Arch 2 Gallery, will happen at 7 pm at the Faculty of Architecture's Centre Space in the Russell Building.)
Carolee Schneemann is one of America's most important post-war artists, and she has a special affection for Winnipeg. She last visited the School of Art in the year 2000. Her video Up to and Including Her Limits from the mid-1970s is especially important as an historical marker made halfway between the action painting of Jackson Pollock (to which it/she explicitly refers as an inspiration) and the recent "Drawing Restraint" performances of Matthew Barney.

NEIL WEDMAN: FORGET ME: 27 Jan. - 4 Mar. 2011 (Reception Wednesday 9 February, 5-8 pm, artist's talk: 6 pm in room 207 next to the Gallery.) Neil Wedman is the ideal kind of artist to bring to an art school because he is accomplished in many media, including drawing, video, painting and bookmaking. Forget Me is made up of "screen test" clips that Wedman shot in 1970, when he was a very young man, set to music by The Cure. The artist: "The original film was shot not by me but under my direction by some forgotten, anonymous buddy whose dad had a movie camera. That was in 1970 and I was fifteen or sixteen years old. I am the person off camera on the left to whom the subjects respond. I can't remember what I was saying to them, just asking non-sequitur type questions I think.... The film was shot in a classroom at the high school we all attended and the on-camera participants were assembled through a kind of open casting call..."

MAZE: Stephen Grimmer, Kevin Kelly, Steven Nunoda, Alex Poruchnyk, Kirk Warren - 3 June to 11 September, 2008, Closing Reception: Thursday, 11 September 5-8 PM. MAZE included art by new tenure-track and recently tenured School of Art professors Stephen Grimmer, Steven Nunoda, Kevin Kelly, Alex Poruchnyk and Kirk Warren. Poruchnyk and Kelly are already well-known members of the Winnipeg art community, and Warren is well-known in the world of design, but all of these artists are at the beginning of their careers as tenured or tenure-track (meaning full-time) professors. This summer 2008 show began to a new season of programming about the relationship in Winnipeg between "uptown" or School of Art artist/instructors and "downtown" or Winnipeg Exchange District artists.

Hannes Larusson - 19 September to 20 October at the Arch 2 Gallery. This exhibition was a collaboration involving Gallery One One One (Director: Cliff Eyland); the Faculty of Architecture's Arch 2 Gallery (Director: Neil Minuk); and the UofM's Icelandic Department. It took place at the Arch 2 Gallery opening Friday, 19 September 2008 at noon. While he was in Winnipeg, Mr. Larusson gave a public presentation at the School of Art about his visual art at RM 207 FitzGerald Building at 8 PM Wednesday 24 September. He also gave a talk about his architectural restoration project at the Faculty of Architecture's Centre Space. Many thanks to the Icelandic Consulate for support of this exhibition.

Revolver Uptown ONE 25 September to 16 October 2008
Opening reception: Wednesday, 24 September, 5-8 PM with Sarah Crawley, Sarah Anne Johnson, Lisa Stinner. Note: every Revolver show included a revolving display of Art School Anatomies art and documentation on the Partition Walls and South Wall and Windows.

Wednesday 8 October 2008 at 7:30 PM Faculty members talked about painting and guest Manon Monchamp talked about conservation issues in RM 207 FitzGerald on the Fort Garry Campus.

USA collective Dearraindrop visited the Art Barn lecture space (Building 21) on the Fort Garry Campus University of Manitoba on Wednesday 15 October at 7:30 PM.

Art Historian Leslie Dawn, Wednesday, 22 October at 3 PM in 207 FitzGerald. Leslie Dawn is an Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Lethbridge and was the first speaker in the Art History Area sponsored and newly revived Art History Presents lecture series. The title of his lecture was "Totems for the World of Tomorrow: Native art, Canadian identity and World's Fairs." Prof. Dawn was available for discussion with members of the university community at an informal gathering.

Wendy Wersch Memorial Lecture by Lucy R. Lippard Sunday, October 26, 2 PM. Note: this lecture happened at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Internationally-celebrated writer, curator, and activist Lucy R. Lippard spoke about how her research into how landscape affects cultural geography and Aboriginal art, and how her own work has risen from strong feminist principles. Over the past 30 years, Lucy Lippard has curated over 50 exhibitons in the United States, Europe, and Latin America. She has also worked with artist and activist groups in creating community actions, performances, comics, and street theatre. Her numerous books have become university texts.

Art School Anatomies Demonstration with Dick Averns, Jeanne Randolph and others in the Art Barn lecture space (Building 21) Wednesday, 19 November 8-10 PM. Plus: works by "art school anatomist" Dick Averns was shown at Gallery One One One. An Art School Anatomies panel discussion with Morris Wolfe, Marilyn Baker and Cliff Eyland happened on Thursday, 20 November at 5 PM in RM 207 FitzGerald.

Wednesday, 26 November 2008 at 6-8 PM Micro Enclosures installation opening and discussion happened: 4th Floor, University College, Fort Garry Campus. This long-term installation of micro-photography by University of Manitoba students was curated by Tijen Roshko and Cliff Eyland.

Les Newman: "Major Solo Retrospective" (North Wall) 15 January to 2 April 2009 Opening reception: Wednesday, 14 January, 5-8 PM - A solo exhibiton of Les Newman's work has been long overdue at Gallery One One One. Newman is perhaps most widely known for works shown at Plug In Inc several years ago that dealt with his experiences as a telephone market researcher. Since then much of his work has consisted of computer drawings and graphics that he re-photographs so that the finished work is at several removes from its digital source. Since 2000, he has done this photo/digital work, but most recently he has been making paintings that build on the methodologies of his previous text and digital prints.

Border Crossings Study Centre - Part One:

Border Crossings Magazine and the University of Manitoba's Gallery One One One have created a unique, portable archive of the magazine's 27-year publishing history. This archive -- known as the Border Crossings Study Centre -- consists of a collection of each issue of the magazine (a total of 105 issues to date), and a range of key documents and ephemera (posters, original art, artists' multiples, correspondence, etc.) associated with Border Crossings's history. This material is hioused in a portable hybrid storage/reading unit that includes a table and box chairs.

The BCSC unit will be placed within the exhibition space of Gallery One One One for three months of the gallery's programming year, and will be accompanied by works by prairie artists featured in the magazine.

Part One includes works by six Winnipeg artists who have graced the cover of Border Crossings Magazine: Eleanor Bond, Marcel Dzama, Aganetha Dyck, William Eakin, Wanda Koop, and David McMillan.

Part Two includes works, mostly from Gallery One One One's permanent collection, by KC Adams, Sheila Butler, Caroline Dukes, Ivan Eyre, Suzanne Gauthier, Noam Gonick, Krisjanis Kaktins-Gorsline, Guy Maddin, Don Reichert, Diana Thorneycroft, Esther Warkov and Richard Williams.
PLUS: A concurrent book launch will happen at the Gallery that evening with an introduction at 7:30 PM for A Bauhausler in Canada: Andor Weininger in the '50s by University of Manitoba art historian Oliver A.I. The Donor Recognition Series features a series of exhibitions of selected works from recent donations to the permanent collection of Gallery One One One. The Series is intended to acknowledge and to celebrate the role of private donors to the gallery and their important contributions, not only to Gallery One One One, but also to the School of Art and the University of Manitoba. Donors include Anna and Lyle Silverman, Bill Lobchuk, and Frank Mikuska The Donor Recognition Series: The Anna and Lyle Silverman Donation: 17 May - 18 June 2010. The Donor Recognition Series is a set of exhibitions of selected works from recent donations to the permanent collection of Gallery One One One. The Series is intended to acknowledge and to celebrate the role of private donors to the gallery and their important contributions, not only to Gallery One One One, but also to the School of Art and the University of Manitoba. Donors include Anna and Lyle Silverman, Bill Lobchuk, and Frank Mikuska. Organized by Gallerist Robert Epp, the Silverman Donation exhibition will feature works by Manitoban artists Ivan Eyre, Don Proch, Andrew Valko, and Tony Tascona as well as major Canadian artists, such as Christopher Pratt, Alfred Pellan, Joyce Weiland and Jack Bush.

27 X DOUG: PORTRAITS BY LARRY GLAWSON, curated by J.J. Kegan McFadden: 19 July - 17 September 2010 (closing reception, Wednesday, 15 Sept. 5-8 pm with an artist-curator conversation 7 pm)
As one of Manitoba's pre-eminent photographic and digital artists, Larry Glawson has been an active member of Winnipeg's artist-run scene for the last twenty-five years. This exhibition consists of twenty-seven portraits taken over as many years, and it acts as a long overdue look at Glawson's photographic practice. 27 x Doug: Portraits by Larry Glawson showcases work from the various portrait series undertaken by the artist over his career, including Family Album (1983), Private Icons (1986), The Self Portrait Project (1988), Paired Portraits (1992), The Anonymous Gay & Lesbian Portrait Project (1992-2005), and his most recent body of work, home bodies (2002-ongoing). The selection of work is accompanied by images pertaining to the artist's various portraits of his partner Doug Melnyk.
