Psalter
[Psalterium commentaria]
Thirteenth or fourteenth century
University of Manitoba, Dysart 3
This book features
the scriptural text in a large hand, with commentary in a smaller hand
(compare this book with Nicholas de Lyra's Bible and commentary), with
capitals in red and blue. Whereas most of the manuscripts in the exhibit
employ a majuscule script (what we know as "upper case"), this
book uses a miniscule script, or "lower case." One might notice
the careful ruling that was done on the parchment before the text was
written. On some pages in this book, a row of prick marks can be seen
at both the inner and outer margins; these marks were used to guide the
rule lines. Also in the margins are instructions for chanting. In the
commentary, the underlined portions are repetitions of the scriptural
text, with amplification added.
