Prairieaction Foundation Update

Senator Sharon Carstairs

The second Annual Meeting of the Prairieaction Foundation took place on November 19, 1999. The President, Carolynne Boivin was pleased to report on another banner year for the foundation. With more than 75% of the endowment fund raised to date, the Campaign

Committee and fund raising volunteers are more determined than ever to reach or surpass the goal of $5 million by December 2000.

Carolynne Boivin’s final duty as President was to introduce her replacement., The Honourable Senator Sharon Carstairs. Senator Carstairs brings a wealth of experience to her new leadership role. In 1984 she was elected leader of the Liberal Party in Manitoba and was elected as a Member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly for River Heights in 1986 and re-elected in 1988 and 1990. In 1988 she was the first woman to be elected Leader of the Official Opposition. She was appointed to the Senate of Canada on September 15, 1994. She was appointed Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate on September 23, 1997 and was the first woman in Canada to hold this position until she resigned on Oct. 4, 1999. Sharon is very generous with her volunteer time devoting countless hours to Prairieaction Foundation over the past few years.

As a survivor of sexual assault, Sharon has been outspoken about the need to understand why children are victimized this way. and how solution-oriented research can help to end abuse. As a founding board member, Vice President, Manitoba Campaign leader and donor of Prairieaction Foundation, the transition to new president promised to be very smooth.

The Foundation is pleased to announce that Dr. Raymond Currie has been appointed to Vice-President. A long-time supporter of the RESOLVE Research Network, Dr. Currie brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new position. He is Professor in Department of Sociology of University of Manitoba. From 1991 to 1999, Dr. Currie was the Dean of the Faculty of Arts. He was founder of the Winnipeg Area Study in 1981. In his role as Director (1981-1990), and survey research specialist, he has assisted a large number of non-profit organizations in survey research. Dr. Currie is a member of the Villa Rosa Corporation and is currently involved in research with Villa Rosa on teen mothers.

He has been the recipient of numerous awards including the University of Manitoba Administrator of the Year Award (1994) and the 1999 Peter D. Curry Chancellor’s Award “for individuals who have made distinct contributions to the University governance and/or development.”
